Film website Flicks.co.nz has announced the nominees for the inaugural TelstraClear Flicks.co.nz People's Choice Movie Awards.

The New Zealand public will decide the winners of the 17 categories through online voting which opens tomorrow. The categories cover a range of genres, recognise a variety of performances and of course include one supreme winner – Movie of the Year.

Amongst a tight field of contenders, The Dark Knight Rises and Moonrise Kingdom lead the nominations. Both are nominated in four categories, as is late entry The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which makes a last-minute run for victory after its premiere this week.

Nipping at their heels are films such as Argo, The Avengers, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Skyfall.

“Most people would agree that we’ve been spoiled for choice by the number of great films this year,” says Flicks.co.nz editor Steve Newall.

“Now I’m looking forward to these films scrapping it out for the glory of taking home one of these awards”.

Amongst the awards Kiwi movie-goers can vote on is their favourite the Hero of the Year award, sponsored by Kate Rodger's Film3. The nominees are the heroes from The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall, The Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hunger Games and Dredd

The public vote will open at Flicks.co.nz tomorrow and remain open throughout December. Winners will be announced in early 2013 and all voters will be entered into a draw to win a huge haul of prizes from Sony, Event Cinemas, Video Ezy, Madman and Rip It Up.
