Lou Pearlman, credited for starting the boy-band craze and launching the careers of the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, has died in prison while serving a 25-year sentence for a massive Ponzi scheme.

The Orlando Sentinel reports 62-year-old Pearlman died on Friday, August 19. The cause of death is not known.

Pearlman's US$300 million Ponzi scheme through his Trans Continental companies was uncovered in 2006. He was convicted of fraud in 2008.

Hundreds of lawsuits were filed in the mogul's case, including one by the Backstreet Boys themselves.

Singers who worked with Pearlman were quick to take to social media.

They thanked the manager for his work but did not forget his convictions.
