NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton has fought off a charge from a faith-based movie to stay at the top of the US box office for a third week.

The rap movie hauled in US$13.2 million over the weekend, taking its total to US$134 million.

Meanwhile, Zac Efron DJ movie We Are Your Friends bombed badly, becoming one of the worst releases in American box office history. It grossed just US$1.8 million despite being released in 2388 theatres across North America.

The only films to gross worse than it over the past 33 years are Ooglieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure and Delgo, both of which failed to crack US$1 million.

We Are Your Friends has also been treated fairly harshly by critics. 3 News awarded the film two stars, calling it dull, unoriginal and overly earnest.

Straight Outta Compton is now the highest-grossing musical biopic ever, passing Johnny Cash film Walk the Line.

Christian drama War Room comes in at two on the new box office countdown with a surprise US$11 million. The film follows a couple as they work to solve their marital problems through prayer.

Co-writer and producer Stephen Kendrick is thrilled with the film's success, telling USA Today, "We are ecstatic! God totally gets the credit for what's happening. Thousands of people have been praying for this movie. With all of our inadequacy, God keeps taking what is said to be impossible and makes it undeniable. We are so grateful."

The latest Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, comes in third and Owen Wilson's new drama No Escape opens in fourth place.

Horror film Sinister 2 rounds out the top five.
