Nymphomaniac has premiered dramatically at the Berlin Film Festival with actor Shia LaBeouf wearing a paper bag over his face on the red carpet and storming out of a press conference.

The film, which is being shown in two parts, is a drama about a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50. LaBeouf plays Jerome - one of the leads in Lars Con Trier's controversial film.

Also in attendance was Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Stellan Skarsgard and Stacy Martin.

The film's controversial director, Von Trier, did not attend the press conference despite being seen at the festival earlier.

In his absence though, those in attendance showered the Danish director with praise.

Thurman said working with Von Trier was "unbelievably refreshing".

Skarsgard, who's worked with Von Trier many times before, joked that his experience on the film was made better by being "locked up with Charlotte Gainsbourg for two weeks."

"Life can be worse than that," he said.

Nymphomaniac is showing out of competition at this year's Berlin Film Festival. A New Zealand release for the film has not yet been announced.
