It's the Olympics of the nail industry, and so, naturally, it's got a name that implies that - Nailympia.

It's a competition for nail artists around the world to show off their skills and establish themselves as the very best in the industry.

Celebrity nail stylist Leah Light was the only Kiwi judge at the Nailympics, and she brought home plenty of new ideas.

She says new trends are often in tune with the change of the seasons - and what she learned at the competition this year has proved no different.

"Coming into summer we've got incredible pastels and white is always going to be a hit," Ms Light said.

And it's not just females who are painting their nails - its men, too.

"It's one of the big things in Europe, for men to be able to wear it all the time - and now there's a whole dedicated range specifically for that. They saw a market it for it."

Ms Light says her main learning from the trip was that New Zealand was on par or ahead of the rest of the world when it came to nail art.

"It was quite exciting to be a part of such a global event and actually realise how advanced we are," she said.
