NZ's summer of pop on the horizon

It's starting to feel like summer, and if it's on cue, New Zealand is about to be inundated with pop music.

With 25 shows by major international acts already announced, it's looking to be our biggest season of pop yet.

From One Direction to Beyonce, kicking things off tonight is Rihanna.

Rihanna fans are already lining up at Vector Arena in Auckland, hours before the pop star ushers in New Zealand's season of pop. She's just jetted in from Australia, leaving some reviewers raving, with others accusing her of being drunk on stage. Regardless, the Auckland lot is ready for the night of their lives.

And it's just the tip of the popsicle. One Direction rolls in later this month, the X Factor finalists not to be confused with OneRepublic, who arrive a month later.

And while the King of Pop is no more, the Queen, Beyonce, is coming here for the first time in just over a week, with not one, but four shows.

Jack Johnson, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars are coming as well; New Zealand has gone pop mad.

Fleetwood Mac arrives in December to maintain some class, but before that, there's Justin Bieber in November. Gone is the tiny Canadian child we once knew, with years under the spotlight leading to a sometimes-topless teen some say is on a downward spiral.

And if you're not into pop, don't despair. When the summer of pop is over, we appear to be moving into the autumn of rock. Bands like Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age are rumoured to be touring here once the leaves start falling.
