With just two months left as occupants of the White House, US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle have announced they're throwing a soirée in their backyard.

The outgoing commander-in-chief has partnered with South by Southwest (SXSW), an annual film, technology and music festival, to create his own event - South by South Lawn.

The festival will be a condensed version of the real thing - taking place on one day, rather than across nine - and will celebrate a "spirit of innovation", a statement on the White House website said.

South by South Lawn is scheduled for October 3, and hopes to "bring together creators, innovators and organisers who work day in and day out to improve the lives of their fellow Americans".

The day will consist of panel discussions, interactive booths, a selected showcase of the 3rd Annual White House Student Film Festival and musical performances from "well-known and emerging artists".

Attendees will be selected by White House representatives, and will get a chance to join the festivities by nominating themselves or others and talking about how they are actively making change in their community.

The idea for hosting the event on White House grounds came after Ms Obama spoke at the SXSW conference in March to promote the Let Girls Learn initiative, which aims to provide education for the 62 million girls worldwide who don't receive schooling.
