Online archive brings NZ artists together

A new online art archive aims to connect researchers with over 17,000 New Zealand artists past and present.

The website is a collaborative effort between the Auckland Art Gallery and the Christchurch Art Gallery and provides access to the databases of 12 libraries, published sources and art society records, with the aim of saving users from "having to trawl through vast amounts of material" to find information on Kiwi artists.

The website is aimed at all types of art researchers – artists and writers, family historians, auction houses and galleries, and students and academics, says Auckland Art Gallery research library manager Catherine Hammond.

Christchurch Art Gallery's director Jenny Harper says the project was born of a common need to connect people with information that was not always easy to find.

"Librarians at the Christchurch and Auckland galleries spotted the same problem, and talked about ways of solving it. Together they worked out an inexpensive and elegant solution that both institutions were happy to support. There is a lot of valuable information about New Zealand artists in gallery libraries and this website will help people find it," says Ms Harper.

The website can be found at www.findnzartists.org.nz.
