Veteran rocker Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to the Charleston shooting victims during his performance at US music festival Firefly in Dover, Delaware on Friday night (local time).

Shockwaves were sent around America on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a weekly Bible study session at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people.

McCartney dedicated his performance of The Beatles hit 'The Long and Winding Road' to the victims, saying, "Let's take a moment to pray for peace and harmony amongst people of different colours in the world."

He also paid tribute to a number of late stars during his performance, including fellow rocker Jimi Hendrix, bandmates John Lennon and George Harrison, and his late wife Linda.

Firefly, which features other stars including Snoop Dogg, Morrissey and The Killers, is due to close on Sunday.
