Rockers Metallica returned to Britain's Reading Festival with a triumphant, hits-filled set on Saturday, paying a touching tribute to late member Cliff Burton.

After arriving onstage in their trademark style to music and footage from the classic Western movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, the rockers opened with 'Fuel' while 40 fans danced in a huge pen onstage.

Frontman James Hetfield told the crowd, "We are Metallica, and this is what we do!"

After an energetic set, which also included fan favourites 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' and 'The Memory Remains', the rockers kicked off an encore with 'Whiskey in the Jar', which was dedicated to bandmember Burton, who was killed in a tour bus crash in 1986.

Foals also played a surprise set at Reading Festival on Saturday.

In an intense six-song set, frontman Yannis Philippakis thanked the huge crowd crammed into the tent for coming to see them, and added that the festival "feels like our home".

In the vacant slot between Twin Peaks and Slaves, the Brit rockers kicked off their secret gig with 'My Number', before launching into 'Mountain At My Gates', 'Inhaler', 'Spanish Sahara', 'Red Socks Pugie', and finishing the set with 'What Went Down' from their new album.
