Comedian Will Ferrell has been joined by former Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon and Step Brothers co-star John C Reilly to celebrate his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Anchorman star thanked his family and fans profusely before attempting to suddenly leave the ceremony.

"You guys have allowed me to do what I love which is rare and a very special thing so thank you for that. It goes without saying that I feel so fortunate and yet I can't accept this award," he joked.

"So just cover it up for someone else. No I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I should just walk away though right? Yeah, no okay."

Molly Shannon gave a speech on behalf of former Saturday Night Live cast members and told the story about when she first met Ferrell while she was waitressing at a baker shop off of Melrose. Shortly after that both Shannon and Ferrell were invited to work on SNL.

"We all feel the same way. We all could not be happier for Will's monumental success because it couldn't happen to a nicer person," said Shannon.

"Will (Ferrell) is exactly the same today as the day that I met him. So I just want to say, 'God bless Hollywood and God bless Will Ferrell.'"

John C Reilly joked that in the far future folks won't have a clue why Ferrell has a star on the street.

"Maybe someday in 50 years, who knows people will look down on the sidewalk and say the things that we say today about some of these people. Who the f*** is this guy?" asked Reilly.

"Why did he get a star on Hollywood Boulevard? But I hope not, I hope not because this man is deserving of all the praise we give him today. Sorry kids."

It was a family affair for the Ferrell household. Ferrell attended the ceremony with his mother, wife and three sons. Ferrell was particularly proud his sons' sharp suits.

"You guys look like a million bucks, you really do. Do you want to step up and take a little tour around? Show people off your suits? Take a little lap," Ferrell said to his kids from the podium.

Ferrell received the 2,547th star on Hollywood Boulevard.

"It's nice to have success of course, but to still maintain a family life through the whole thing," said Ferrell.

"We've really been able to strike a balance between how intense the movie work can be but then my wife and I are a real partnership in terms of raising our kids and so that's the kind of thing that I am most proud of. It's great and it's great to have this but it's also great to have a beautiful family."

Ferrell's latest film, Get Hard, opens in New Zealand cinemas tomorrow.
