Lifelong Pokémon fanatics will know that Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle were the only three Pokémon you could adopt in the series' first-ever games, Pokémon Red and Green - or Blue, if you were outside Japan.

The popular mobile instalment, Pokémon Go, has followed that structure seemingly to the letter - but it now appears that there's a way of bypassing the traditional route and adopting a Pikachu, like in the Gameboy Color release Pokémon Yellow, instead.

Pikachu is widely recognised as the face of Pokémon as it featured heavily in the original anime cartoon series, and people with the creature are the envy of many players across the globe.

The process for starting your Pokémon Go journey with a Pikachu is below:

1. Set up a brand new Pokémon Go account - remember, you will need a new email address to do this.

2. When Professor Willow asks you to pick your Pokémon, refuse to pick one by walking away.

3. Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle will disappear and then reappear in front of you.

4. Do this a few more times until they disappear completely.

5. Eventually they'll reappear - but this time, they'll be standing next to Pikachu.
