Pop star Chris Brown has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a day-long standoff and search at his Los Angeles home that began when a woman called 911, police said.

He surrendered to armed police who surrounded his house in LA on Tuesday morning (local time).

He was not in handcuffs, appeared relaxed and is talking with police.

His lawyer had earlier arrived and his entourage had exited the house, lining up outside the front door.

Heavily armed police surrounded Brown's Los Angeles home in a bizarre standoff that involved the troubled star protesting his innocence on Instagram while inside.

Police were called to the mansion at about 3am when a woman, Baylee Curran, alleged the US R&B singer pointed a gun at her.

Ms Curran told TMZ Live Brown threatened her with the weapon because she was admiring a piece of jewellery at his home. She told the entertainment news site she had partied with Brown in the past and he had been nice, but in Tuesday night's incident (local time) he appeared to be "out of it".

Ms Curran has posted to Instagram, apparently addressing supporters of Brown, saying: "Do you all think I wanted this and I caused this? If somebody put a gun to your head, what would you do, call the police?"

At one point in the police standoff, Brown reportedly threw a bag out of a window containing a gun, other weapons and drugs. He apparently taunted police, telling them to 'come and get me', TMZ says.

He posted a number of strange video rants on Instagram.

In one, he appears to deny any knowledge of the incident, saying: "So I don't sleep half the damn night I just wake up to all these mother f--king helicopters, choppers is around, police out there at the gate."

Brown was convicted in 2009 for his infamous beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna. He has had further legal troubles resulting in community service and probation, along with other violent incidents that have involved Drake, Frank Ocean and members of the public.
