The Pop-up Globe is coming back to Auckland after a bumper season in 2015.

The success of the Pop-up Globe theatre in the City of Sails earlier this year has seen it given a new life for 2017.

The theatre has been given a complete redesign and will include all details the original London theatre had, right up to the cannon on the roof.

"Today's announcement is the result of months of work by our creative teams," artistic director Miles Gregory says.

"We were surprised by how popular it was [in 2016], but I think what happened was people came along out of curiosity and found they really enjoyed the theatre we put on," he says.

The location will also switch from central Auckland to the Ellerslie racecourse, so to emulate the original theatre on the grassy banks in outer London.

The new theatre will play host to four Shakespeare productions that weren't shown last season.

Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, and Henry V will all be put on from February next year in the new theatre.

The Globe's debut season had to be extended twice, and saw over 100,000 tickets sold.

"I think the new theatre interior is going to really deliver," Dr Gregory says.

"The detail on the scenic front of the theatre is spectacular; it's a three-storey palace. It's a really exciting space to be in.

Tickets for next year's shows will be on sale from Tuesday afternoon.
