A private memorial for Prince has been held at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota and the pop music legend has been cremated, his publicist has confirmed.

Yvette Noel-Schure told the Associated Press in a statement the "final storage" of Prince's remains would be kept private.

State troopers have been seen escorting family and friends into Prince’s estate so they can pay their respects.

Prince’s half-brother Maurice Phillips and bassist Larry Graham spoke to media and fans gathered outside, thanking them for their support.

The fences at Paisley Park are adorned with purple balloons, letters and flowers left by fans since news of the singer’s death broke on Thursday (local time).

The cause of Prince’s death at the age of 57 remains unknown.

At a media conference on Saturday the Carver County Sheriff said it could take weeks for autopsy results to determine how he died.

However, he said there was “no reason to believe” suicide was responsible, and there had been no signs of trauma on Prince’s body.

He was found in an elevator at his home by staff on Thursday morning and pronounced dead a short time later.
