A documentary about the plight of Russian punk band Pussy Riot has been picked up by executives at US network HBO after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer chronicles the arrest and prosecution of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, who were tried on charges of hooliganism for performing a protest song in a Moscow church last year.

Directors Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin's film was unveiled at the festival on Friday and it is now heading for the small screen after HBO Documentary Films bosses snapped up the US TV rights.

A Punk Prayer features extensive courtroom footage, as well as scenes of protesters from rival camps clashing on the streets of Moscow over the issue.

The feminist trio was found guilty and jailed for two years last August. Samutsevich was later freed on appeal, but the remaining two are serving out their sentences at remote labour camps.
