The proposed Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei is a step closer to its goal, after a couple donated 30 rare posters out of storage to be sold.

The 42 Hundertwasser posters have been donated in a bid to raise the millions needed to build the gallery.

Spokesperson Jenny Hill says when people buy the art they can know it's going to a good cause.

"People have been so generous but this is a fantastic way of giving them something back, as it were," she said.

Ms Hill says when the couple brought in their artwork they didn't realise how much it was worth - around $1000 per poster.

The posters were designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser as part of a conservation week campaign.

Ms Hill says "they've been selling really well", with only around 12 paintings left for sale.

"They're a beautiful thing, very rare and vintage."
