In a year dominated by shock political events, and far too many unexpected deaths, it's almost reassuring that the top trend of 2016 was the Rio Olympics.

Entertainment events also cracked the top 10, with Pokemon Go, the Oscars and Game of Thrones all featuring.

It's also been a huge year for celebrity deaths, and as such #RIP comes in at number 9.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, both US Election and Trump feature in the top 10 also. The President-elect has a passion for using the social media site to address his followers, and those opposed to him were also happy to vocalise their views online.

Hillary Clinton's emotional tweet after conceding the US Presidential Election was the third most retweeted tweet of the past 12 months, with over 637 thousand.

Harry Styles' jab at pop-singer Taylor Swift was number two.

Rather bizarrely, with over 1.4million retweets, YouTube gamer 'elrubius' grabbed the top spot with a citrus-based tweet in August.

An emoji speaks a thousand words, and in a year filled with memorable moments of happiness, sadness and shock, tweeters were using them more than ever.

The most used emoji of the year was the 'face with tears of joy', depressingly followed by the crying face. However, several variations of the traditional love heart feature as well.
