Robert Downey Jr is reportedly set to reprise his Iron Man role in the upcoming Captain America 3.

The Oscar nominee is in final negotiations to bring billionaire Tony Stark and his superhero alter ego to the big screen once again for the third installment of the Captain America franchise, according to Variety.

Downey Jr has recently kept fans guessing to whether there will be a fourth film in the franchise, but if he signs on for Captain America 3, it will mark the third upcoming film in which he reprises his role - he has already suited up for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3.

Marvel hinted at the storyline of Captain America 3 with this tweet:

It suggests the film will be based on the Marvel Civil War, which sees individual superheroes pitted against each other in the wake of the US government passing a Superhero Registration Act.

Variety reports that in the film Tony Stark / Iron Man supports the program, but Steve Rogers / Captain America does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing a feud that essentially makes Stark a villain.

Captain America 3 is slated to begin production next spring with the film hitting cinemas in May, 2016.
