Room review

The Oscar favourites are flooding Kiwi cinemas this month, with two new arrivals this weekend -- Steve Jobs and Room.

Room has already won awards, courtesy of lead actress Brie Larson, but her young co-star shines just as brightly.

The unbreakable bond of mother and child reaches new levels of intensity and intimacy, as we meet five-year-old Jack and his mother.

Their home is just one small room, and it's all Jack has ever known.

Why they are trapped there becomes apparent soon into the film, the horror of that delivered with a restraint that serves only to amplify the impact.

But this is only half the story, and even those familiar with the novel and this adaptation will find the telling incredibly rewarding.

I had such high expectations for this film and it entirely delivered. Young Jacob Tremblay in such a pivotal role as Jack was captivating, conveying both the strength and vulnerability so key to this story. It's an immersive, deeply emotional watch and well worthy of four-and-a-half stars.
