Rufus talk sea obsession, fight against the number 7

When electronic dance trio Rufus started their latest album, they couldn't get a peculiar thing out of their heads -- jellyfish.

They've been touring for the past three months and are in Auckland for the tail end of their biggest tour.

They've been performing their new album Bloom, written in Berlin after the group decided to get away and get inspired.

They spent three months there and a lot of the tracks are about being away and reuniting with loved ones.

But the overall theme of the album came from something entirely different -- jellyfish, a creature they've long used to describe their music.

"We were sort of bringing up images on our desktop screen in our work station while doing the album," says band member Jon George.

"But we really like this idea of weightlessness and the floating feeling."

Hence the title Bloom, the collective noun for a group of jellyfish.

Rufus says Bloom has also been about getting out of their comfort zones.

But that only went so far for George. The man who can get on stage in front of thousands is afraid of the number seven.

Which can actually cause quite a fuss when you're recording.

"If we type in 'project 17', you'll see Jon [make an angry face]," says band member Tyrone Lindqvist.

"And he won't say anything, he'll just go in, save as, changes it to '18'."

George says it's just his unlucky number, but it seems as though luck has been on their side.
