Russell Brand has axed his online news show and vowed to give up his presence on social media so he can devote his life to "learning".

The British funnyman has been broadcasting episodes of The Trews on his YouTube channel since early last year and he regularly weighed in on issues such as politics, international events and current affairs.

However, Brand's garbled rants led to widespread online mocking, including a viral campaign which compared his talks to the nonsense lyrics of Blur hit 'Parklife'.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star appeared to become further disillusioned with the show after he failed to sway public opinion towards his favoured political party in the UK general election in May, and now he has confirmed he is giving up The Trews due to the "incredible condemnation" it has received.

He posted a link to his latest broadcast on his Twitter page under the title "Final Episode Of The Trews - Goodbye, Good Luck" and in the clip, Brand revealed the episode would be his last, saying

"If you speak out... even from a modest online platform, you become the recipient and target of such incredible condemnation that... it's in a way overwhelming and in others completely understandable, but it's interesting to become part of the news on which you are reporting... So I think we have gone as far as we can with The Trews for now... It feels to me like a spiralling... avalanche and I feel like I want to spend some time learning, understanding, developing... So I'm not going to be doing The Trews, I'm not going to be on Twitter, or Facebook, I'm going to be learning because I know real change is coming and I wanna be part of that... I can't do it (The Trews) the service it deserves until I go away and learn some stuff... I'm going away to think and to learn... Thank you for your support..."
