Russian officials have finally revealed the whereabouts of incarcerated Pussy Riot rocker Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, three weeks after she was removed from a detention centre.
The punk star was transferred from a jail in Mordovia to a more remote penal colony, but details of her new home were not shared with members of her family.
Her father, Andrei, and husband Petya Verzilov, repeatedly demanded information about the transfer, but their requests were not met.
The lack of updates even prompted Amnesty International boss Denis Krivosheev to warn Russian authorities that they were at risk of breaking their own laws and violating Tolokonnikova's human rights by withholding information.
Now the country's human rights ombudsman, Vladimir Lukin, has confirmed Tolokonnikova was moved to a prison in Krasnoyarsk Krai, which lies in Siberia. Lukin claims the rocker was moved there because she was born in the region and is registered as a permanent resident of the state.
He also confirmed she is currently in the jail's medical unit, but did not offer any further details on her condition. Tolokonnikova was previously hospitalised behind bars in Mordovia after embarking on a hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova was imprisoned with her bandmates Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich last year after they were found guilty of hooliganism for staging a protest performance against Russian President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church.
Samutsevich's sentence was commuted and she was freed in October, 2012, while Tolokonnikova and Alekhina are due to be released in March.
