Sam and Emmett of Wellington say they are rapt after breaking The Block NZ records last night with their huge winning prize of $480,000.

The 29-year-olds, who flatted together in Aro Valley, were clearly overjoyed when their house sold for such a large amount, slapping each other on the back and cheering.

"We're bloody excited, we're rapt!" Emmett exclaimed.

"Oh mate, I've never had that feeling before in my life," added Sam.

"That was the biggest day of our lives. And this day probably won't end for a few days."

Throughout this season of The Block NZ, Sam and Emmett played the nice guys, treating the other teams well and making sure to get along with everyone.

But they also made no secret of applying cool-headed strategy to how they played the game - so was there pleasantness for real, or just part of their tactics?

"I think we genuinely are nice guys," said Emmett.

"That also was strategy. There's no point on getting off-side with people. The competition runs right to the end, and the moment you start back-stabbing people, it's never going to work well for you.

"You're in a bubble on The Block, so the moment you upset the apple cart, you're going to have a bad time."

The pair won the right to choose the order of the evening's auctions and opted to go last, a choice they started to second-guess when Emma and Courtney's home sold for over $1.5 million and scored them a record $300,000 profit.

"I was very, very scared," recalled Sam.

"The only thing that kept me and Emmett in the loop there is that our houses are very similar. We thought if their house is going to go for that amount, we've got a good chance.

"Then as soon as that first bid went up for $1 million, we started off higher than all the rest and we could be in for a good night here. Then it just went up and up, and we can't wait to meet the buyer, shake his hand, and give him a Sam and Emmett hug."

Asked what they're going to buy when their $240,000 each is paid out, the boys both said clothing was the first thing - although Emmett added using the money to get off other people's couches and into his own home would be a good idea.

The duo were very appreciative of the support their friends and family had given them, and were especially thankful to their fans up and down the country.

"You're unique, you get our humour and we love you for that," said Emmett.

"The support, the messages that we've been getting are absolutely bonkers. I still haven't received a negative message. The people out there are so kind to us, [we give them] the biggest thank yous in the world."

Sam and Emmett will join Paul Henry on Monday morning to talk further about their big win.
