After stepping out of the spotlight over health issues, pop star Selena Gomez has made a triumphant return as a lady in red at the 2016 American Music Awards.
The 'Come and Get It' hitmaker accompanied her floor-length red dress from Prada with sparkly dangly earrings, a ponytail with a centre part and smoky eye makeup.
She won the award for Favourite Female Artist - Pop/Rock and gave an emotional acceptance speech.
"I had to stop, because I had everything... and I was absolutely broken inside," Gomez said, referencing her hiatus.
"I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what's in [your heart]. I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it any more.
"If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. And if that's anything, whether you respect me or not, that's one thing you should know about me - I care about people."
In August, Gomez announced a self-imposed hiatus so she could focus her lupus.
"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," the 24-year-old said at the time.
"I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."
Her appearance at the American Music Awards in LA was hinted at by the show's producer and confirmed today by her makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, who gave a preview of her look on Instagram.
