Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall has opened up about the complexity of aging as a woman in the limelight.

She told Paul Henry on Friday she feels fortunate to be able to use her platform to talk about issues affecting women in the 21st century.

"I feel very fortunate because of my career, and the roles that I have played and the projects that I've been involved with, that I have a platform to talk about things that are affecting me as a woman in society today, and really opening up a discussion," she said.

"I'm not solving any problems  I'm an entertainer, I want to entertain, it's not going to be a polemic that I'm forcing down someone's throat.

"I'm just exposing and trying to understand the challenges of getting older, especially in the limelight. Where do you go to age in this world?"

Cattrall said that though the 1980s were a golden age for film and television, she keenly anticipates the direction that the industry is heading in.

"Where we are and going forward especially for women, especially on the world stage, I think is very exciting," she said. "And it's taken us a long time to get here."

Cattrall is in New Zealand to launch this year's Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition for Specsavers.
