Teen pop sensation Lorde will tonight be competing for her first major New Zealand music award.

Her song 'Royals', which reached the number one spot on the US Billboard charts, is one of five finalists vying for the APRA Silver Scroll.

It's New Zealand's annual song of the year award judged purely on songwriting, not commercial sales.

The four other contenders include indie band the Phoenix Foundation, singer-songwriter Anna Coddington, duo Tattletale Saints and pop singer Aaradhna with her song 'Wake Up'.

Tonight's event at Auckland's Vector Arena will also see Dave Dobbyn inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
