Smiles, happiness and laughter for Slayer

Along with Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, Slayer are one of the biggest four thrash metal bands on the planet.

In fact, their 1986 album Reign In Blood has been called “the heaviest album of all time".

Slayer have been amazing since 1981.

They have album names like Reign In Blood and God Hates Us All, and lyrically tend to focus on things like serial killers, necrophilia, Satanism and warfare.

I've loved Slayer ever since a teacher at my school confiscated my friend's Diabolus in Musica album.

And years later, they've become one of my favourite bands to talk to, because they are so nice.

The band’s frontman Tom Araya spoke to 3 News backstage at Soundwave in Australia.

“It's good, life is good,” he says.

He had just played to 25,000 people.

“To me it's all new, to me it's always new,” he says. “When we play to big crowds it still surprises me.”

Slayer is humble. Slayer is always laughing. And still recording - a new album this year, hopefully.

“Yeah we have new stuff,” Araya says.

He is in a happy place, and he should be. He's been fronting a multi-Grammy award winning band for more than 30 years.

“The only difference with me now is I can't headbang anymore as I have a plate. I can’t do that which is a bum out. That’s something I enjoy doing, and now I can't. It's an internal struggle, you know what I mean?”

But he still enjoys performing.

“I can still go out there and scream my ass off, and play a mean bass and smile a lot.”

But how did Slayer become so happy?

“Because everyone is having a good time and smiling, and I start smiling,” Araya says. “I can’t help but laugh. I mean it's Slayer, you want “arrrgh” - I don't see that  - I see smiles as they are getting hit in the head.”
