It is one of the most artistic times of year for Hamilton, with the 16th annual Spark International Festival of Media, Arts and Design kicking off today.

The event will include 35 presentations, exhibitions, and panel discussions from more than 20 local and international presenters.

Spark will officially open at 9am with a live performance from Kiwi musician Rob Thorne at Wintec's Gallagher Hub.

International guests include artists Gabrielle and Silvana Mangano from Melbourne, photographer Derek Henderson from Sydney, and film director Tapiwa Chipfupa of South Africa.

"The programme of events for 2014 is diverse and dynamic and we're excited to be welcoming presenters at the cutting edge of their fields to the Waikato," says festival director Megan Lyon.

Spark is open to the public and runs until Friday, August 15.
