Bruce Springsteen opened his Brooklyn show with a moving 'Purple Rain' cover to honour Prince following his death.

The Boss covered the 1984 single, awash with purple lighting, instead of his usual 'Meet Me in the City', as part of The River Tour.

"Prince forever! God bless," he said as the song came to a close in New York's Barclays Center, Rolling Stone reports.

Prince was found dead at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota on Wednesday night (local time).

Springsteen and Prince both hit commercial success in the summer of 1984 with Springsteen's Born in the USA album arriving within weeks of Prince's Purple Rain.

Springsteen and the E Street Band have also honoured David Bowie with an onstage performance of 'Rebel Rebel', and Glenn Frey's 'Take It Easy' Eagles cut.

They return to the same venue for another concert on Monday night (local time), as part of their first tour in two years.

The tour features a full-length performance of Springsteen's 1980 album, The River, in celebration of its 35th anniversary.
