Star Trek Beyond trailer thrills fans

The studio behind the upcoming new Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, have released the latest trailer for the film in front of a select group of hard-core Trekkies in Los Angeles.

A special Star Trek fan event was held on the Paramount Studio lot on sound stage 31, where the original series was shot 50 years ago this year.

Fans were treated to an audience with Star Trek director/producer JJ Abrams, alongside his hand-picked director of Star Trek Beyond, Justin Lin.

Stars of the franchise were also in attendance -- Chris Pine, who plays Captain James Kirk, Zachary Quinto, who is Mr Spock, and Kiwi actor Karl Urban, who plays Bones.

Along with the new trailer, fans also got to see extended clips from the film and a behind-the-scenes feature.

Star Trek Beyond is of course the highly anticipated next instalment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by JJ Abrams in 2009.

The Fast and Furious director Justin Lin is at the helm of this epic voyage of the USS Enterprise, and this chapter will see her intrepid crew face a mysterious new enemy, one who will put them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

The film will have its world premiere in San Diego to coincide with Comic Con.
