Star Trek red carpet all about JJ

It's all cameras and glamorous Australian reporters on the red carpet for the new Star Trek movie.

Across the road is an entire building turned into a giant screen, and everywhere you look there are photographers and rabid Trekkies, straining to see the movie's director, JJ Abrams - the man behind shows like Alias, Fringe and six years of Lost.

"I definitely love working on a bunch of things at once for better or worse, and certainly not always for better," says Abrams.

Such modesty - his last Star Trek film, four years ago, made $450 million; Star Trek Into Darkness is expected to make even more.

One of the most popular members of Starfleet on the carpet is Wellington-born Karl Urban.

"It's the genius of JJ - he's delivered a film for fans of film - he hasn't just made a film for Trek fans," says Urban.

Urban got on so well with Abrams that the director has cast him as the lead in his new TV show, Human

If the show gets picked up, it will be huge for the New Zealand actor.

"It was an opportunity I felt too good to pass up. I wasn't looking to do something like that, but then I read the script and talked to JJ and Joel Wineman and I thought I would kick myself if I didn't do this," says Urban.

Human is still being shot, and when he's done with that Abrams is taking over the next episodes in a small movie franchise called Star Wars.

He really is quite breathtaking.
