Steven Spielberg will direct a big screen adaptation of Ernest Cline's sci-fi novel Ready Player One, according to reports.

The book, set in a futuristic virtual world, is an ode to 1980s pop culture that even references Spielberg in its text.

The story follows a teen who discovers the first clue to finding an Easter egg hidden in the massive virtual online utopia called The OASIS. That first clue, tied to the OASIS creator's obsession with the 1970s and '80s, leads him on a quest that could change his life - or prematurely end it.

Warner Bros bought rights to the film in 2010 and the latest script was written by Zak Penn (The Avengers).

Spielberg will move onto Ready Player One after The BFG and it will be the filmmaker's first Warner Bros production since 2001's AI.
