It's a day where almost anything goes. The suits are sharp, the heels are high and so are the spirits.

Thousands of punters poured into Addington raceway on Christchurch Cup Day, looking for a good time. But as the day went on and temperatures rose, the behaviour declined, and for many, the free water on offer was clearly too little too late.

Police were quick to stamp out any disorderly behaviour, but as the afternoon progressed, dignity as well as money was being lost.

The best-dressed man and lady competitors showed much more class – and style – with Andrea Bryant of Christchurch taking out the women's event in one of her own designs. She had to step in when her model fell sick.

“I kind of thought I had the wrong number," she says. "[It’s] unreal. I didn't believe it. It was awesome.”

The best-dressed man award went to Gareth Hide in a three-piece suit.

After casting his eye across the Cup Day crowd, Lindauer style ambassador Colin Mathura-Jeffree says Christchurch Cup Day goers have a unique style.

“There are lots of bright colours, fascinators and some wide-brim hats,” he says.

As for the official silverware, the New Zealand Trotting Cup was won by hot favourite Terror To Love for the second successive year.
