A surprise Kanye West show in New York descended into chaos with thousands of fans swarming the venue, causing the event to be cancelled.

People hoping to see the husband of Kim Kardashian lined the streets outside a Manhattan concert hall, but instead of a concert to remember, the night ended with fans claiming police used pepper spray to disperse them.

The day before, West's scheduled show at the Governors Ball, an area outdoor music festival, was cancelled due to a forecast of severe weather.

"We're doing PABLO at 2am in Manhattan. Sorting out where now," Virgil Abloh, West's creative director, wrote online following the cancellation.

Though a location for the surprise concert was never disclosed, fans began to gather outside Webster Hall, a large music venue in the East Village that had hosted electronic music duo Galantis as part of the Governors Ball series.

As the crowd built, the Webster Hall tweeted out that it was not hosting any late show and Kanye himself tweeted that his 2am show was "sold out".

Police arrived to clear out revellers who refused to leave at 2:30am, although deny using pepper spray on the crowd.

Abloh stated on social media the event was cancelled "due to safety priority" before West's wife sent the following message to fans:
