Sweeney Todd homecoming for cast member

Sweeney Todd homecoming for cast member

Later this week, New Zealand Opera's Sweeney Todd will open in Wellington.

Its just-completed run in Auckland was a homecoming for one of its stars, who used his time to encourage students at his old school, Kristin, to pursue their theatre dreams.

Joel Granger has returned to New Zealand from Australia, where he's been making a name for himself on stage.

This month he returned to his school where it all began, to help other students who have their sights set on the theatre spotlight.

He's sharing his voice with students keen to follow in his footsteps, and sharing his thoughts on the importance of performing arts and music in schools.

"I think a lot of people graduate high school and think, 'Oh I wish I'd done that or that,' and I think make the most of everything while you have it."

While back in New Zealand, Granger took the opportunity to visit his old school, to thank his former teachers and give advice to other students.

He's also well aware it can be difficult for young people choosing a career path like his.

"People who do well in the arts are often bullied, but I was really lucky here to be encouraged."

Granger himself was teased for his hair colour.

"I've learned to love being a ginger," he says. "I even wrote a musical about it - I See Red."

He and his red hair began their weeklong season of Sweeney Todd on Saturday at the Civic Theatre in Auckland.
