Taika Waititi is creating a new music video for ‘Poi E’, the 1984 song which features in his film Boy.

The new video is said to made from a mix of deleted scenes from Boy, the film’s final dance sequence and the original ‘Poi E’ music video.

Written by linguist Ngoi Pewhairangi with music by Dalvanius Prime, ‘Poi E’ was created with the intention of teaching young Maori to be proud of being Maori in a format that they were comfortable with.

Prime recorded the song in late 1983 and released it the year after under his own label, Maui Records.

The Patea Maori Club provided the vocals above the track's funky rhythm that featured bass, Linn drums and a synthesiser.

Boy is currently enjoying a hugely successful cinema run, nearing the box office mark of NZ$6 million.
