The Canyons director slams Lindsay Lohan

Director Paul Schrader has criticised Lindsay Lohan for failing to promote and support their much-maligned movie The Canyons after putting his faith in the actress, despite her personal troubles.

The Mean Girls star appeared alongside real-life porn actor James Deen in the low-budget erotic thriller, but she did not take part in any of the promotion ahead of the film's limited release last month after completing a 90-day court-ordered stint in rehab.

She decided against travelling to Italy to attend The Canyons premiere at the Venice Film Festival, insisting she wanted to focus solely on her "health and well-being".

Schrader refused to gossip about his embattled leading lady during a press conference at the festival, making it clear that questions about her personal issues were "off the table", although he praised Lohan for her work and even compared her to Marilyn Monroe.

However, the filmmaker has now turned on the actress after accusing her of repeatedly blowing off press opportunities to push the movie, which has been widely savaged by critics.

In a candid and lengthy post on Facebook, he writes, "I am mystified and disappointed by LL's refusal to support The Canyons. She is a producer of the film, a 25 percent owner. She has received wonderful reviews (among the negative) for her performance..."

Schrader adds, "I hired her when no one else would. She fought to keep the role when I wanted to fire her for unreliability. She has no other films in the can... She repeatedly said she would come to Venice but never did. She said you would support the film but never did. She never showed for the photo sessions, including the session for the ad campaign art."

The director also claims Lohan snubbed a New Yorker magazine interview, insisting she didn't have time to chat to a reporter, and he reveals, "Film Comment gave her the cover but she would not give them an interview (I had to write a profile piece to save the cover)..."

Schrader concludes, "I can only surmise that Lindz had decided that Canyons is part of a reprobate past she must put behind her in order to move forward. She was never comfortable working with James Deen and perhaps this still sticks in her craw...

"Don't get me wrong. I want LL to move forward, have a healthy life and, if possible, a career, but I disagree with her decision to (passively not aggressively) turn her back on Canyons. It's an extraordinary piece of work and serves her well. Lindsay, your work is excellent. Own it!"

The Canyons became Lohan's biggest US box office flop to date upon its release in August, grossing less than US$13,500 in its opening weekend.
