Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey looks set to dominate the upcoming Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards after landing seven nominations.

The adventure epic will go up against The Avengers, Battleship, Prometheus and Life of Pi for Outstanding Work in a Visual Effects-driven Feature, while Argo, Flight, The Impossible, Zero Dark Thirty and Rust and Bone have received nods for the use of visual effects in a supportive capacity.

The remainder of The Hobbit's nominations were for the creation of Gollum and the Goblin King, and various other technical achievements.

Animated mentions went to Brave, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians and Wreck-It Ralph, and, in the TV realm, fantasy series Game of Thrones will go head-to-head with Once Upon a Time, Falling Skies, Curiosity, and Mockingbird Lane, which ironically was scrapped after one TV special.

The winners will be announced on 5 February in Los Angeles. Director Ang Lee will be feted with the prestigious Visionary Award.
