The Last of Us was censored for release in New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the UK and other PAL territories, developer Naughty Dog has confirmed.

The violence in the game's multiplayer mode was toned down to avoid difficulties in getting it rated.

Responding to a question on a forum, Naughty Dog representative 'EvangM' stated: "The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed in order to accommodate those choices."

PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us was released in June to almost unanimous praise.
