The Nice Guys review

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling dive into the '70s at the movies this weekend in a comedy called The Nice Guys.

They play a pair of private detectives who pool resources in the hunt for a missing woman.

The story story takes place in 1970s LA -- the clothes, the disco, the cars, the smog and, of course, plenty of dodgy goings-on in the underbelly of the LA scene.

Working that scene are two private detectives -- Jackson Healy (Crowe) and Holland March (Gosling).

They couldn't be more different in personality and methods, so when a case brings them together, the potential for much conflict is high.

The potential for mining that conflict for comedy gold is just as high, especially when Ironman director Shane Black is in the director's chair.

The twists and turns of this crazy plot, the R-rated comic chemistry between these two class actors, and all set to a cracker '70s soundtrack -- what more could you want from a few hours in the cinema?

Strangely The Nice Guys was a slow burner for me, which I wasn't expecting. It took me a good 20 minutes to sink into this '70s vibe. The minute I did though, there was no going back, except going right back to the cinema for another viewing.

Crowe and Gosling are Disco -- a comedy coupling I am praying already will totally be back for more. Please green light the sequel already!

Four-and-half stars.
