The Veils poke fun at Piggate, Ponytailgate in new video

Part-Kiwi, part-British band The Veils have a brand new video - a damning interpretation of a few recent events involving political leaders, including our very own.

Total Depravity is The Veils' latest album, and the video for 'Low Lay The Devil' has a sense of the totally depraved.

It's the band's and director Tu Neill's take on three incidents featuring current and former world leaders.

"Generally people aren't held to account, leaders aren't held to account for things that people lower down the chain would be," says singer Finn Andrews.

There's a nod to former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's bunga bunga parties and an homage to 'Piggate' - a claim made about, but denied by, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

"We were going to get a Boris [Johnson] impersonator but it cost ‎£1500 - ‎£1500!" says Andrews.

"It took ages to get back for starters, then he said, 'I don't get out of bed for less than ‎£1500'," Neill says.

But it's the opening scene of a man pulling a girl's pony-tail which is arguably most unnerving - no prizes for guessing the reference here.

"It was grotesque, completely grotesque," Andrews says.

"I still can't... there's sort of so much of this stuff around though these days.

"I sort of thought that would be the end of Mr Key but then apparently not."

Neill also directed The Veils' last video 'Axolotl'.

He admits he's terrified about how this one will be received but puts his faith in the devil - danced by Kiwi comedian Trygve Wakenshaw.

"I think it will be hopefully an enjoyable experience, obviously there are [gross] bits but we've tried to temper that with the lightness of Trygvy's performance."

But when it comes to John Key's little cameo, Andrews thinks the Prime Minister probably won't see it.

"I don't think he'd care to be honest," Neill laughs.

The 'Low Lays The Devil' video is out now everywhere - including the UK, Italy and New Zealand.
