Tom Hardy has been announced as the lead actor in a film adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit videogame series Splinter Cell.
The Dark Knight Rises star will take on the role of Sam Fisher, the character players take control of in the Tom Clancy’s award-winning stealth action game series that has sold more than 23 million copies since its debut in 2002.
In 2011 Hardy won the 2011 BAFTA Rising Star Award and the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Bronson. His other film credits include Inception, Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, RocknRolla and Star Trek: Nemesis.
Eric Warren Singer will write the screenplay. Singer has previously written Clive Owen thriller The International and American Bullshit, which is to be directed by David O Russell and star Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper.

“He has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and videogame fans alike.
“In addition, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers today. We’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story for the Splinter Cell movie, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”
Ubisoft announced earlier this year that Michael Fassbender would be the lead in another adaptation of one of their most successful franchises, Assassin’s Creed.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the next game in the franchise, was announced at E3 this year and is set for a release in March next year.
