Public tributes have poured for Robin Williams, following news earlier today the actor and comedian had died in an apparent suicide.

In an official statement, US President Barack Obama described Williams as "one of a kind".

"He arrived in our lives as an alien - but ended up touching every element of the human spirit," he said.

"He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets."

Other celebrities including Steve Martin, Ellen DeGeneres, Eric Idle, Kathy Griffin, Steve Carell, John Mayer, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto, Eddie Izzard, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Danny DeVito have tweeted about the 63-year-old's death.

New Zealand filmmaker Vincent Ward released a statement today describing Williams as a "gentle man" with a "wild wit" after working with him on What Dreams May Come.
