Depeche Mode and Patti Smith are among the acts who will feature on a new U2 tribute album commemorating the 20th anniversary of the group's Achtung Baby album.

Jack White and singer/songwriter Damien Rice will also revamp tracks from the groundbreaking album as part of the project, which U2 frontman Bono announced at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada on Friday.

The rocker is at the festival promoting new U2 documentary From the Sky Down.

The album, which was commissioned by editors of British music magazine Q, will feature White performing ‘Love Is Blindness’, while Depeche Mode will cover ‘So Cruel’ and Smith will tackle ‘Until the End of the World’. Rice has recorded his version of ‘One’.

Bono says, "It’s strange, because when I hear the album, when U2 do it, all I hear is what’s wrong with it. But when I heard all these artists doing it, I thought, 'It’s really good'."
