Real Steel director Shawn Levy is to helm the big screen adaptation of hit PlayStation franchise Uncharted.

A movie based on the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake has long been in the works at Sony, with directors Seth Gordon, David O Russell and Neil Burger all previously attached.

Levy, who also has the Night at the Museum franchise to his name, is currently riding high after the success of Stranger Things, which he executive-produced and directed along with the Duffer Brothers.

The Uncharted franchise, developed by Naughty Dog, is one of the most celebrated PlayStation franchises ever; its action-packed, relic chasing games - laced with good-natured humour - carrying a similar appeal to the Indiana Jones films.

Scripting duties for the Uncharted movie have been handed to Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Grey), but there's no word yet on the cast.
