A kapa haka group from Whangarei has taken out their fifth straight Super 12s title.

Teams of 12 performers had 12 minutes to impress the judges at The Cloud in Auckland.

The top prize of $12,000 went to Whangarei's Mai Tawhiti, who incorporated balloons and brooms to take out the title for the fifth year in a row.

Group spokesperson Otene Hopa says it's a safe environment to push the boundaries of kapa haka a little.

"I think the Super 12s gives you an arena to try different things that would probably be frowned upon in a more traditional sense."

"Every year it's different it's just a matter of getting together and seeing who comes up with the most creative ideas," says team member Te Amo Morehu.

"It's just a lot of fun - it's kapa haka outside of the traditional box."
