Leonardo DiCaprio has won his third Golden Globe at the 2016 awards for his role in The Revenant.

The film also won its own Golden Globe as the Best Motion Picture, Drama.

He was overwhelmed by applause and a standing ovation before he began his moving acceptance speech.

Talking about The Revenant, DiCaprio said, "Two years we found ourselves submerged deep in nature with all of its complications and the beauty that it gave cinematically.

"This film was about survival; it was about adaptation. It was about the tramp for the human spirit, but more than anything it was about trust and there's no one more deserving of that trust than our director, Alejandro Iñarritu."

He thanked the actors, particularly his "good friend" Tom Hardy.

He then addresses indigenous people groups around the world, saying, "It is time that we protect your indigenous land from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them. It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet from future generations."
