Members of the west-African group Tinariwen have chosen family over fame ahead of their first and only New Zealand show tonight.
Two of the group from war-torn Mali stayed behind to look after their nomadic families who live in refugee camps.
Laura Frykberg spoke to one member, who did make the trip, about making music in a country ravaged by war.
