Westfest adds Fall Out Boy, Papa Roach

Soundgarden, Faith No More and Judas Priest will be joined by emo rockers Fall Out Boy, nu-metal stars Papa Roach and metal legends Fear Factory at next year's Westfest.

Today's second line-up announcement also adds Lamb of God, All Time Low, Frenzal Rhomb, 8 Foot Sativa, Antemasque, The Devil Wears Prada, Escape The Fate, Kitsch and Animals As Leaders to the list, which also includes Lagwagon, All Time Low, Wonder Years and Crown the Empire.

And due to "greater public interest than anticipated", the venue's been switched from Alexandra Park to Mt Smart Stadium, where the Big Day Out was staged for nearly two decades before a brief stint at Western Springs.

But with the long-running Big Day Out on hiatus, could Westfest take its place in the Kiwi rock calendar?

"Mt Smart is a renowned venue," says promoter Olly Martin. "I'm hoping that we're going to become more regular, as Big Day Out was, and become an iconic New Zealand festival."

The show will be held on Tuesday, March 3. Tickets cost $175, which Martin reckons fans will accept is a good deal, compared to what it would cost to have them play at your house.

"If they think it's too steep, that's cool. They'll have more money to spend on groceries, I guess."

Fall Out Boy have sold more than 4 million albums thanks to hits like 'This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race' and 'Sugar, We're Goin' Down'. The band went on a break in 2009, but reformed last year and have a new album out in January, American Beauty/American Psycho.

Fear Factory rose to prominence in the 1990s with their combination of electronics, industrial and metal, selling more than 1 million albums and paving the way for Rammstein and Static-X.

Papa Roach hit gold in the nu-metal era with songs like 'Last Resort', but have since dropped the rapping in favour of straight-up rock. Their new album F.E.A.R comes out in January.

The exact running order is yet to be decided, and there are rumours of a third line-up announcement coming in the new year. But one thing's for certain – Soundgarden will headline.

"It'll roughly be ascending order from band's statuses, but it comes down to the different stages and things like that as well, as to when they actually play," says Martin.

The exact stage layout, and whether it mimics the old Big Day Out twin-stage setup, is yet to be locked in. Martin says the organisers are "exploring a few options".

"We're hoping to have all that information out early next year."

Tickets to Westfest are available through Ticketmaster.
